Ok what I really mean is ” I don’t return my client’s call immediately.”
I work with many of my clients over 4 sessions and during that time I help them understand “what makes their dog tick” and apply this understanding to their own dog/s with the help of 4 simple principles. We build up a rapport and trust in each other so they have a safe place to ask questions and learn at both their own pace and that of their dog.
So although it feels strange and sometimes quite difficult for me to not return a call immediately. I know from experience that when someone leaves a message asking about something that has literally just happened. My client is actually panicking, their adrenaline is high and stress hormones are flooding their body. If I were to call back immediately, nothing and I mean nothing, would be achieved for my client. When humans (or dogs for that matter* ) are in this state of panic, it is very difficult to take in information and almost impossible to remember it.
It would be like me offering you some advice on how to help your dog walk to heel when you have just realised that you have lost your toddler or someone else’s… in the middle of a really busy park.
If you find ever find yourself in this state of panic, my advice would be to make sure you and your dogs are safe and then stop doing anything. If you can manage it, take 3 deep slow breaths and be safe in the knowledge that these feelings will pass and when they do your inner wisdom will help you know exactly what to do.
* An example of a dog in a panic is when it’s out and about and pulling madly on it’s lead trying to get to what seems like anything/nothing it’s just pulling you around. This is not the time to start to teach your dog how to walk to heel.
If you are curious to know more about “what makes your dog tick” take a look at my website http://www.juliehelpsyouehelpyourdog.co.uk or if you would like to know more about what makes you tick take a browse around http://www.michaelneil.org. I would love to work with you and your dog and now you will be safe in the knowledge I will only ever call you when you are ready to learn!!!
Peaceful paws always.
